Why is fitness so important?

Fitness is an important part of our lives and something which is worth receiving our attention. We all want to be healthy and strong and to have a positive outlook on life. With an increase in awareness, there have been several fitness trends in the fitness industry that has emerged.

With so many fitness trends out there, which one is the right one for you? This article will cover some of the most popular fitness trends at the moment, with a short description of each, in order to assist you with your fitness and workout choices.


Pilates training

Pilates is a mind-body approach and is also a form of functional fitness. Function fitness is a classification of training that prepares the body for real-life movements and activities. Functional training or functional movement trains the muscles to work together and prepares the body for daily tasks by simulating common movements that you might do in sports, at home or in sporting activities, and is different to just lifting a certain amount of weights in a gym in an ideal posture created by a machine.   

Pilates training is a form of low-impact training and focusses on the body as a whole with the idea of bringing about balance in the body. When some muscles around a joint are too tight and the opposite muscles are too long around that joint, it brings about an imbalance and a serious risk of injury. Pilates aims to restore this balance and therefore reduces the risk of injury. Pilates is also a great cross-training method for all kinds of sports. 

Movements such as walking, jogging, running, sprinting, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, turning, standing, starting, stopping, climbing, and lunging will be made easier while training to improve functional strength. 

Pilates can be done in group training using a mat and several smaller pieces of equipment like a Ball, TRX, Bosu, Trampoline, Barre, Weights, Pilates Ring, Ankle weights, Kettle bells, Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel and Arc Barrels, to name but a few. Cardio is incorporated from time to time, depending on the goals of the client.

Pilates training is offered in groups and in private (one-on-one) training. Pilates is a type of exercise that can be adapted and modified for the young and old, unfit and fit, athlete or weekend warrior.

Yoga training

Yoga is a practice that may have originated in India. It involves movement, meditation and breathing techniques to promote mental and physical well-being. There are several types of yoga. 

Yoga is an ancient practice that involves physical poses, concentration, and deep breathing. A regular yoga practice can promote endurance, strength, calmness, flexibility and well-being. Yoga is a popular form of exercise around the world. 

There are many styles of yoga and one should choose a style based on one’s goals and fitness levels. Choosing a beginners’ class if you have never tried yoga before, is always advisable. 


Weight training

Weight training is a type of strength training that uses weights for resistance. By creating stress to the muscles when using fee weights or by using weight machines, these exercises will activate the muscles, which will increase strength.

 It is important to use proper technique by avoiding injury. It is advisable to consult with and schedule a private training session with a Pilates trainer or Personal trainer beforehand and to learn how to use the weights correctly. Your Pilates trainer or Personal trainer will also be able to assist you in creating the most effective and well-balanced training program for you.

CrossFit is a high-intensity level type of workout. CrossFit is a strength and conditioning workout made up of functional movements performed at a high intensity level. Many workouts feature variations of squats, push-ups, and weight-lifting that lasts fore a certain amount of time to build muscle. 

 The workouts are effective because of their emphasis on the elements of load, distance and speed, which help participants develop high levels of power. The workout could utilize different equipment to accomplish this, including kettle bells, rowers and bikes, medicine balls, speed ropes, and boxes.

 A word of caution though. There are some risks involved in doing a CrossFit workout. Injuries usually occur as a participant becomes tired, which causes their form to also become tired, causing the load to be shifted from the areas that is supposed to handle the stress, to other areas that cannot handle the stress that well, which then creates injuries.


  1. Boxing Club:
    Joining this facility will teach you how to fight and compete. If becoming a boxing champion is your goal, then this is the place you want to be. Competition among club members can be fierce as all members are trying to become the next “golden boy”.
  2. Fitness Club:
    Here boxing is used as a means to become fit and to get you in shape. Before starting a class, you may get an orientation session, after which you will join a group class. 


High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

High Intensity Interval training is a system whereby you perform a number of high-intensity workouts with short intervals of ow-intensity sessions. This training is beneficial for anyone wanting to lose weight quickly. 


Solo Fitness (Running, Cycling)

Being indoors for most of 2020 including the beginning of 2021, has been difficult for most of us. Activities that naturally lend themselves to social distancing such as running and cycling, has remained some of the popular choices, with bicycle sales showing an upwards curve. 

With an increase in biking paths in and around South Africa and the world, bike rides have become more accessible and safer for many people. 


Gym versus Studio?

Fitness studios have become the more preferred location as opposed to a traditional gym or outdoor space. Courses that certify Pilates trainers and Pilates Instructors, as well as other Fitness professionals, have grown dramatically and have become more popular than ever. This is due to the growing demand within the fitness industry and the fact that more people have realized the importance of health and fitness.
