“Human movement is the academic study of how human beings move around, perform and exercise, in daily life and especially in sport. It teaches the body awareness as well as how to improve the overall movement of the body.”

Why is it important for Pilates instructors to understand the science of human movement as it relates to Pilates?

When an instructor has proper understanding of the human body and its’ movement they are able to acknowledge the dangers and executions of the exercises that is performed. It is extremely important to be able to understand the biomechanics of how the body works to fix poor alignment instead of training in poor alignment. The instructor needs to understand the goal of the exercise to be able to cue correctly, correct where needed, use your props (equipment) and improvise correctly in order to help the client execute the exercise so that the goal is achieved. It also allows for the instructor to compile an effective program to fit the client’s needs.

During a Pilates session the instructor places a lot of focus and time on the clients’ body composition and posture. Observation of your client is a top priority to ensure the correct form and execution to ensure working in correct alignment and avoiding injury. The Pilates Instructor needs to be able to observe tightness, weaknesses, imbalances, compensations and dysfunctions in order to create modifications to exercises based on science.

What is the significance of “the powerhouse” in the proper teaching of Pilates anatomy?

In terms of anatomy, the powerhouse supports and protects the pelvis and spine, essentially providing a strong foundation upon which all movement can be performed. However, the concept of the powerhouse goes far beyond anatomy; it is where body meets mind. The powerhouse is the source of all movement and the central pillar of the Pilates philosophy. We cannot look at the powerhouse simply as the muscles of the abdominals, the back extensors, the pelvic floor, the diaphragm and hip flexors. It takes a lot of mind-to-muscle connection which requires the basic principles of Pilates; focus, concentration, control and precision.

Research studies in respect of the effects of Pilates and exercise

Epidemiology is the study of distribution or determents of disease or injury in big populations while placing focus on physical inactivity and poor physical fitness as risk factors for injury or disease. These studies have shown that inactivity and poor fitness are inversely associated with risk of premature mortality, chronic illnesses such as hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes and strokes.

This just shows how beneficial physical exercise is. Not only for your physical well- being but also Psychological due to Endorphins (the happy hormone) being released which will help improve your cognitive state and due to Pilates being a holistic way of exercise that includes the body and mind it will benefit you in more ways than one.

Not only does Pilates improve your overall health and wellness but it also educates you on your own body, how to move it correctly, how to get connected with it and even how to listen to your body. Pilates is very focused on body awareness which means that you learn when and how to activate the correct muscles and when and how to relax the correct ones. For example, you don’t want to tense your neck and shoulders while performing a shoulder bridge, but you want to activate the Hamstrings and Gluteus while engaging the Abdominals and stretching the Hip Flexors.

In summary Human movement in Pilates is fundamental for improving not only quality sessions, but also understanding of your own body and being aware of its’ movements – and Pilates is a great form of exercise to help you achieve that.
