What is the Pilates Ladder Barrel?

The Pilates Ladder Barrel is made up of the large barrel or ladder barrel and the small Spine Corrector barrel, joined together with an adjustable frame to make it work for different heights and builds. It is made up of wood and leather, does not take up much space, and is very easy to move. There are no springs involved, unlike the Reformer, the Cadillac or Trapeze Table, the Chair or the Reformer, so the set-up is also much easier.

Why the Ladder Barrel?

We agree with Joseph Pilates who said that you cannot exercise without machines, as it is just not as efficient.

Few people have been into a Pilates studio which offers an experience on all the equipment, so you might not be familiar with just how effective Pilates large machines are, like the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Tower, Ladder Barrel or Spine Corrector barrels are.

Reformer classes are very popular these days. Although working with a Pilates machine that has springs is a unique exercise experience with huge benefits, the rounded shape of the barrels have something very special to offer, i.e., support of the spine during movement.

This week we are going to focus on the ladder barrel. This piece of equipment do not usually get much attention, but it works in a very effective way towards a balanced and healthy body.

The rounded shape of the barrel has something very special to offer, which is supported spinal movement. The human spine has curves and working on a flat surface like the Reformer carriage or Cadillac/Trapeze Table the two different shapes sometimes fight with each other. We often want to flatten our lower backs, only to be told by the Pilates Instructor to keep our neutral pelvis and lumber spine, which sometimes does not feel natural.

However, on the barrel you can melt your curved spine over the curves of the barrel. Another great advantage of using the barrel is that it is easy to use. The fact that it does not have springs, means that it is less complicated to set up, which means less time spent on the set up. Also, using the barrel feels less scary to some people, since the barrel does not have any moving parts.

While the exercise repertoire is smaller than that of other equipment like the Reformer, Cadillac/Trapeze Table, Tower and Chair, this piece of equipment offers great abdominal work with improved posture, back extensions, side bending and rotation, spinal support and unique stretches.

The curved surfaces of the ladder barrel and spine corrector barrel supports the spine and encourages more even and safer movement which is helpful when teaching Pilates to pregnant women people with injuries, or Pilates beginners.Pilates Dynamics believe that the ladder barrel and spine corrector barrels are essential for practising Pilates, and we love including exercises on these pieces of equipment during our Pilates training classes.

But come and see for yourself what the fuss is about when it comes to the ladder barrel and spine corrector and book a class to try out these amazing Pilates machines.
