Are you thinking of starting a career in teaching Pilates? You are probably already a passionate member of the practice. So why not turn it into a career or part-time job to supplement your income?
You are probably wondering if you can earn a living teaching Pilates? Yes, you certainly can.
We will give you the 10 best reasons to become a Pilates Teacher and you will more than likely recognize some of these reasons in yourself:
1. You want to convince everyone you meet to try out Pilates.
This is an absolute must for people wanting to become a Pilates Instructor. You must love the practice.
2. You are not enjoying your work or find yourself in a rut.
Work is not always fun, but you should not feel stuck in it. Work should be meaningful and challenging and you should be able to enjoy it. If not, it is time to consider a career change. Exercise is generally more fun than most jobs. You will be creating and writing programs and teaching classes to others for them to become stronger and more flexible. At the same time, it will challenge your skill to get others to perform the exercises correctly and with precision and control. Every client is different, and every class will be different, so becoming bored is not an option.
3. You enjoy working with people.
This is another important requirement. You will be dealing with people all day long. Pilates Instructors are hands-on, encouraging, and motivating. We know it can be challenging to work with people all the time, but many Instructors find this an interesting challenge and one that is rewarding. Of course, you will also need to do administration and marketing in between, but that makes for a good mix.
4. You need to find a more meaningful career.
If your current work does not leave you feeling fulfilled, it could be time for a change. The great thing about Pilates is that you are making a meaningful change in people’s lives. Besides, if you are unsure whether you should leave your job, you can always do Pilates part-time, before taking the big step.
5. You are looking for a career that is more active and physical.
If sitting in front of a computer is not your thing, then working as a Pilates Teacher will provide an active career that is much healthier. It will deepen your own practice.
6. Pilates is not a 9 to 5 job.
There is a lot of flexibility choosing to become a Pilates Instructor. If you need to be flexible and need to schedule work around your family, then becoming a Pilates Instructor might work for you.
7. Are you considering a career within which you can grow?
Fitness is a growing industry. The fitness industry has seen significant growth and transformation over the years, with growth estimations of nearly 7.5% annually between 2022 and 2030. The fitness industry is experiencing rapid expansion due to a surge in health-conscious consumers and the proliferation of diverse fitness offerings. Pilates is part of this growth and shows no signs of slowing down.
8. Are you a Personal Trainer, Bio kineticist, or Physiotherapist searching for something else to add to your skills?
If you are already in the fitness and health industry but are looking at ways to set yourself apart from every other personal trainer, bio kineticist or physiotherapist then Pilates is a great way to achieve this.
9. Do you love learning and personal growth?
Whether you have a fitness qualification or not, Pilates Instruction is a great way to keep learning and challenging your mind and body. You will keep learning as science evolves.
10. Do you want to earn a living doing something you love?
This is the most important question and if you love Pilates and want to share it with others and earn a living from it whilst it makes you feel good, then follow your passion. You can teach Pilates well into your 80’s.
So, what are your reasons for becoming a Pilates Instructor or adding Pilates to your current skills set?
This is ultimately your personal choice. To make that career move, you will need good reasons to motivate you. Does Pilates fit your goals and priorities for work and life? If so, then make a choice and don’t look back.
What qualification do I need to become a Pilates Instructor?
Pilates is not regulated, so licencing is not required. However, most studios need their Pilates instructors to be certified. Clients will also be looking at your certification and qualifications.
Becoming certified is not as expensive or as time consuming as you think. However, it depends on the program you chose and the time you have available to complete the certification.
It could take you 12 months to complete the basic Pilates Mat qualification, or it could take you 3 months. It all depends on how much time you have available to complete your practical hours and get yourself ready for the exams – it really is up to you.
Once you have a certification, you can look for a job at a Pilates studio or at a gym. You can also take the independent route and take on clients in your home or rent space at a gym or studio. This is a flexible career that allows you to shape it however you want.
What other qualification can I do once I have obtained the basic Pilates Mat course?
Pilates Reformer training is hugely popular overseas and in South Africa. It is the latest buzz word. Once you have obtained your basic Pilates Mat course, you can sign up for the Pilates Reformer course which will allow for more scope for growth and income.
