Over the past couple of years, it is safe to say that Pilates has taken over the exercise world and we see some of our favorite celebrities both male and female like Lori Harvey, The Kardashians, David Beckham, Jennifer Aniston – to name a few – gushing over Pilates.

What is Pilates?

Even though Pilates has become popular, there are some people who still do not understand what it is about so we will briefly cover this question.

Pilates was developed by a man called Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century and was originally called “Contrology”. Pilates is a full body workout, using spring and body weight resistance – and many other equipment – and control placing emphasis on the core to control proper breathing and breathing patterns, correct spinal and pelvic alignment.  Joseph Pilates was involved in all different types of sports and developed this exercise method to create a 360-degree type of exercise with mind and body involved for sports as well as for all people, active or not.

Pilates strengthens stabiliser muscles which support the skeletal structure with emphasis on the spine which will ultimately improve posture and unload the spine and the joints.

With that being said, there are people who enjoy Pilates as a form of exercise only and there are others who are very passionate about Pilates and movement that they decided to become Pilates Instructors and if you are either one of those, Pilates Dynamics is the best studio near you to get the best Pilates classes and Internationally Recognized Certified Instructor Training Courses.

What is the main focus of Pilates?

The main aim is to condition the deeper, supporting muscles of your body to improve posture, balance, and coordination.  Pilates is a full body exercise regime.  Equipment-based Pilates includes specific big machines that works against spring-loaded resistance, including the ‘reformer’, which is a moveable carriage that you push and pull along its tracks.

Speaking of the Reformer, as Pilates Dynamics we are well known for our Pilates Instructor Training Courses we run throughout the year and our next Pilates Intensive Reformer Course is starting 26 August 2023!!!

Reformer Pilates near me

The Reformer is the most famous of all the Pilates Apparatuses.  Specially designed to challenge and strengthen the body, the ‘reformer’ is so named because it was created to reform the body of the participant. Consisting of a large frame, topped with a flat, cushioned platform; this platform (or carriage) is attached to the frame by springs and moves as you push or pull with your legs and arms. The reformer also has long straps with handles on them which can be pulled to move the carriage.

The Reformer is perhaps the most user-friendly apparatus on which to perform foot/leg work.  It places the body in a comfortable, non-weight bearing supine position and recruits the muscles in a balanced fashion.  Stretches performed like the hip-flexor; hamstrings and adductor muscles cannot be duplicated as effectively on any other piece of Pilates apparatus.

The jumping series is unique to the reformer which accommodates plyometric (powerful jump training) movements in a full range.

Exercises are done lying down back, front, or sides, seated and standing, with or without balance – whilst the machine moves.  At Pilates Dynamics, you can join a Beginner or Intermediate or Athletic Pilates class. How great is it to have such options?!!
