Pilates for Teens and Kids: Benefits, Classes and Who It Suits
Pilates for teens and kids in Randburg: build core strength, posture and injury resilience for sport and dance. Private and semi-private teen sessions.

Pilates for teens builds the deep core strength, posture and body control that growing bodies need, whether your teenager plays sport, dances, sits at a desk all day or is working with a therapist. At Pilates Dynamics in Randburg, teens train in private and semi-private sessions on fully equipped studio apparatus, and younger kids (5 to 12) can also join small group classes.

What is Pilates?
Pilates is a body-conditioning method that builds strength, endurance, flexibility, mobility and coordination from the inside out. It was developed by German-born fitness pioneer Joseph H. Pilates, who refined his exercises during World War I, including work with injured and bedridden internees, and designed both mat exercises and spring-loaded equipment to strengthen the body as a whole. Benefits of Pilates for teens and kids
Pilates suits young people of almost every type, and the benefits change with what your child already does.
Pilates for teenage athletes
Teens who play hockey, tennis, rowing, basketball, swimming or rugby can use Pilates a few times a week to strengthen their bodies, improve range of movement and reduce the risk of injury. A strong, balanced body also tends to recover more quickly if an injury does happen.
Pilates for young dancers
Pilates has been used by dancers since its earliest days and is still part of training for many top ballet companies. It adds strength, balance and control, so it is an ideal companion to ballet, hip hop, tap, modern and other dance styles.
Pilates for less active kids and teens
Children and teens who don’t have a sport or active hobby often find Pilates a comfortable way into exercise. Every exercise can be adapted, so it is achievable for all body types and strength levels, and progress is easy to see.
Pilates for kids with motor-control or posture challenges
Children with motor-control difficulties, or those in occupational therapy or physiotherapy, can benefit from Pilates alongside their treatment. Joseph Pilates originally called his method “Contrology”, and the focus on control helps strengthen muscles, improve balance and posture and build self-discipline. Teens with a curve in the spine may also find our article on Pilates for scoliosis useful.

Pilates benefits for parents and adults

Pilates isn’t only for the kids. For adults it is a low-impact, full-body workout that builds core strength, improves posture and increases flexibility without straining the joints. For the full picture, read what Pilates does for your body.
Physical benefits
- Core strength: works the deep stabilising muscles of the abdomen, lower back, hips and glutes, the “powerhouse” that supports the spine.
- Better posture: corrects slouching and imbalances from desk work and long hours of sitting by realigning the neck, shoulders, hips and back.
- Flexibility and mobility: slow, controlled and dynamic movements build long, lean muscle and keep the joints mobile.
- Joint and back pain relief: reduces stress on the knees, hips and back, which makes it a good choice for injury prevention and recovery.
- Balance and stability: improves coordination and dynamic balance, reducing the risk of falls.
Mental and lifestyle benefits
- Stress reduction: deep breathing and concentration help lower anxiety and clear the mind.
- Mind-body awareness: you learn how your body moves, which carries over into better everyday movement and ergonomics.
- Adaptable to you: mat classes use body weight and small equipment to make movements easier or harder, while large equipment classes use the reformer, tower and chair. Not sure which suits you? Compare reformer vs mat Pilates.
