Pilates for children builds posture, core strength, balance and focus. See who benefits and how our Kiddies Pilates classes for ages 5 to 12 work.

Kids pilates

Pilates for children is a safe, structured way for kids to build strength, flexibility, coordination, good posture and focus. Because it is low impact and easily adapted, it suits children of all fitness levels, from sporty kids and dancers to those who would rather not play team sport. At Pilates Dynamics in Randburg, Johannesburg, our Kiddies Pilates classes are for children aged 5 to 12 and run on Tuesdays at 16:00, in small groups led by qualified instructors.

What is Kiddies Pilates?

Pilates is a body-conditioning method developed by Joseph Pilates, who originally created his controlled exercises to help with rehabilitation and improve how the body works. Today it is widely used to improve posture, core strength and movement efficiency in adults and children alike.

Kiddies Pilates adapts the method for growing bodies. Rather than focusing purely on exercise, it combines movement, balance, breathing, concentration, posture and core strength. Classes are interactive and fun, using games, challenges and creative movement alongside Pilates-based exercises, so children develop important physical skills while building confidence and making friends. It builds strength and endurance without unnecessary strain or bulk.

Why children need more movement

Between school, homework, television, gaming and phones, many children sit far more and move far less than they used to. Childhood is a critical stage of growth, and the movement habits children form now can influence their health for years to come. Pilates helps lay a strong foundation by encouraging natural movement patterns, good alignment, strength and control.

The benefits of Pilates for children

Better posture

Long hours of sitting, screen time and heavy school bags make poor posture increasingly common. Pilates strengthens the muscles that support the spine and encourages good alignment, helping children develop healthier posture habits early on.

Core strength

A strong core supports almost every movement we make. It improves balance and stability and helps children move more efficiently and with less fatigue during school and sport.

Balance and coordination

Many Pilates exercises ask children to control their movement while keeping their balance. This supports coordination, body awareness and motor skills that carry over into sport, dance, swimming, gymnastics and play.

Flexibility and mobility

Children need mobility for sport and daily movement. Pilates keeps muscles flexible and reduces stiffness in a safe, controlled way, with an emphasis on good movement mechanics.

Focus and concentration

Pilates asks children to listen to instructions and pay attention to their body position, breathing and movement. Many parents find this improved focus carries over into the classroom.

Confidence and wellbeing

As children grow stronger and more coordinated, they become more confident in their physical abilities. Pilates focuses on personal progress rather than competition, so children can celebrate their own achievements and develop a healthy relationship with exercise.

Which children benefit from Kiddies Pilates?

  • Sporty children: whether your child plays rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, tennis, swims or runs, Pilates complements their sport by improving strength, flexibility, balance and body control, which can also help reduce the risk of injury.
  • Young dancers: Pilates is widely used in dance training to build strength, control, balance and flexibility for ballet, hip hop, modern and other styles.
  • Less active children: for children who don’t play organised sport, Pilates is a fun, low-impact and welcoming way to stay active and build healthy movement habits.
  • Children who need extra support: children with motor coordination challenges, or who are in physiotherapy or occupational therapy, may benefit from the controlled movement and body awareness Pilates develops. Please check with your child’s doctor or therapist first; our biokineticist, Aurelie, is also happy to advise.
